MIDNAPORE, 8 MAY: With the East Midnapore district continuing to figure in the list of red zone districts of the state, six more persons have tested positive for Covid-19, taking the total number of positive cases to 36 till today.
Among the six new cases, five persons including a minor and two women belong to a family while another one hails from Mecheda.
Moreover, this family resides in Haldia, an industrial belt, which has become a cause of concern to the district health department as most positive cases have been reported from only Haldia region in the district. So far, 16 positive cases have been reported in Haldia, said a health official.
Confirming the new positive cases reported last night, Dr Nitai Mondol, chief medical officer of health said, “A 73-year-old man had tested positive for Covid-19 on last Monday. Since then, we had quarantined his family members and others who came in contact with him. Last night, we found six new positive cases of which five family members of the infected person were tested positive.”
Dr Mondol also said, “A total of 53 persons have been quarantined soon after the elderly person found positive. Among them, we had sent swab samples of at least 11 persons for testing. Last night, the test reports of five persons showed positive”.
According to the health officials, the 73-year-old man was a grocery shop owner at Brajalalchawk under Bhabanipur police station limits in Haldia. As he had tested positive and his five family members have also been infected, the district administration has sealed off the Brajalalchawk market for the next ten days to prevent any spread of the virus among the residents.
Meanwhile, a woman bank employee of Mecheda has tested positive for novel coronavirus. The woman, a resident of Balluk village in Tamluk, is now admitted in a private hospital in Kolkata. She will be shifted to a Covid hospital soon, while the five infected persons have been shifted to the Baroma Covid hospital in Mecheda today, said Dr Mondol.
