KRISHNAGAR, 13 JUNE: An impasse over the appointment of a vice-chancellor in the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) in Nadia has been resolved after the West Bengal governor has given his consent on the state government’s proposed candidate.
On the state’s recommendation, Jagdeeo Dhankar on Thursday appointed additional director of agriculture (general) Sajal Ghosh as VC till the university gets a regular VC.
Trouble broke out between Nabanna and Raj Bhaban when the governor didn’t accept the name of BCKV professor Tapas Mondol, a former Trinamul Congress MP from Ranaghat, recommended for the post by the agriculture department.
Instead, Dhankar on 29 May gave a six-month extension to BCKV vice-chancellor Dr Dharani Dhar Patra, whose tenure was to end on 9 June.
A group of Trinamul Congress affiliated employees’ union at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) started conducting agitation to protest against the extension of service of the vice-chancellor for the next six-month period.
The employees under the banner of Karnachari Samsad squatted in front of the vice-chancellor’s office alleging that the governor has extended the service tenure of the VC without consulting the state government.
Even, the TMC affiliated teachers’ association WEBCUPA and a section of students also gheraoed the VC’s bungalow on the same issue.
Failing to bear the pressure from the Trinamul Congress affiliated Karmachari Samsad, the vice-chancellor, Dr Patra finally tendered his resignation from his post.
He sent his resignation letter to chancellor cum governor,  Jagdeep Dhankar on Friday afternoon,
As a result, the university had to run without a VC for at least two days.
State agriculture minister Ashis Banerjee  then made a fresh  recommendation to Raj Bhavan by sending Ghosh’s name.  “Taking a conspectus view of the matter as BCKV chancellor, I accord approval to the proposal of the agriculture department and appoint Sajal Ghosh to perform the duties of the vice-chancellor for six months or till the appointment of a regular VC,” the chancellor said.
