MIDNAPORE, 20 AUG: After conducting rescue operation for about five hours, a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) jawans retrieved the bodies of two labourers trapped under the rubble of the collapsed century-old abundant district land and land reform office in Midnapore today.

According to a police official, the deceased have been identified as Subhadip Pramanik and Ram Soren, both residents of Dhadika in Garbeta.

The incident occurred at around 6 pm on Tuesday when a major portion of the abundant office suddenly collapsed. At that time, as many as 25 labourers had been working inside the building. As soon as the building collapsed, most of the labourers had been able to come out immediately from the building but four labourers could not get out from inside the building. Later, two labourers came out unhurt, but the two victims who were working inside a room of the building got trapped.

The land department officials immediately called the fire brigade and police who initiated rescue operation with four pay-loaders. As it was raining then, the fire brigade officials could not get entry inside the dilapidated building. Later, the district administration called the NDRF who initiated the operation at around 12 in the night. The NDRF jawans finally retrieved the bodies at around 4 am today.

According to the land department officials, the building was built during the British period. The department has recently constructed a new building at a nearby site where the entire office was shifted. For the last few days, the department has deployed labourers to shift the old documents from the old office to the new building. The labourers were also deployed to demolish the building. Yesterday, it was a rainy day, but the labourers were working to shift the documents to the new building. Amidst this situation, the building suddenly collapsed.
