KRISHNAGAR, 21 NOV: Krishnagar for the first time in its history is celebrating its grandest festival Jagaddhatri puja amidst the Covid-19 outbreak and the celebrations this year is slightly different from the past years.

Each year, pandal hoppers and people from outside Krishnagar manage to catch a glimpse of varied themes of puja pandal along with traditional forms of pujas in various Baroaries. But, this year, among the most sought after themes of Jagaddhatri puja pandals across the town, a puja committee at Chowrastha in Krishnagar has themed their celebration on Global war like situation where Jagaddhatri has been symbolized as Mother (Earth) carrying a baby (life) who is shown very much worried on nuclear war.

The Mother (Jagaddhatri) appeals to all to keep peace failing which life will no longer withstand on the earth. The Mother is also shown holding the earth in her two hands with tears coming down from her eyes, the implication being that if the war-war situation is aggravated, she will be life-less. The artist Debabrata Malakar has modeled the idol with his own innovative ideas.

Prof. David J Gross, Nobel Laureate and Chancellor’s Chair of Theoretical Physics, University of California, had recently told at the IIT-Madras convocation that the world is undergoing rapid change and as the event of the last few months show, no one can predict what will happen next week, much less beyond that.

On Covid-19 pandemic, he said many scientists predicted that such a pandemic would inevitably arrive and yet their warnings were largely ignored.

“Similarly, many scientists warn of impending disasters of global warming, climate change. Yet, these warnings have not been sufficiently addressed. I take this occasion to warn all of the continuing and indeed worsening danger of nuclear weapons whose use could destroy all life on the planet. We must not ignore it”, he said.

Malakar, who has tried to focus his idea through his model is similar to that of the warning which has already been addressed by the Nobel laureate.

Jagadhatri Puja is the most important festival celebrated after Durga Puja, Laxmi and Kali Puja in Krishnagar. This year, several restrictions on celebrating puja festivities have been imposed to prevent the spread of Covid infections. Amidst this situation several baroaries and club committees have arranged pujas after keeping Covid protocols in mind.

KRISHNAGAR, 20 NOV: Considering the guidelines enacted by the Kolkata High Court over some restrictions on puja festivities to curb the spread of Covid infections, the Krishnagar police district has banned immersion procession with ‘Saang’(a structure made by bamboos to place the idols on it before moving for immersion).

Superintendent of police, Krishnagar PD, Biswajit Ghosh said, “Carrying idols with saang on shoulders of bearers is completely banned as this type of immersion procession will violate the very motive of the High Court guidelines. We cannot allow the puja organizers to conduct such a traditional immersion process for this year only after considering the ongoing pandemic situation.”

Mr Ghosh also said, “If any puja organizer violates the high court guidelines and covid protocols, we will take legal action against them.”

During the Kali puja, same restrictions and covid protocols were imposed while a puja committee of Harijan Palli deliberately violated the guidelines and took out procession carrying idols with saang on the shoulders of the carriers.

“We have initiated a case against the puja committee and charges under section 188 of Indian Penal Codes for violating court order and government order and sections under epidemic act have been slapped against the committee members”, a senior police officer said.

This apart, the Krishnagar police district has also imposed some restrictions while conducting Jagaddhatri puja. In this respect, the Krishnagar police district had conducted a meeting with puja organizers and ruling party leaders where Mr Ghosh had clearly mentioned that all puja pandals should be declared as a containment zone. “In case of smaller puja, maximum 20 persons shall be allowed (not more than 15 persons at a time) and in case of big puja pandal, maximum 60 persons shall be allowed (not more than 45 persons at a time)”, Mr Ghosh said.

While informing about immersion related guidelines, Mr Ghosh said, “No carnival programme will be allowed. No procession will be allowed for immersion of idols. Band parties and lighting arrangements will not be allowed on the way to immersion ghat. The shortest possible route from pandal to immersion ghat shall be taken for the purpose of immersion.”

Meanwhile, a considerable number of Krishnagar people want to conduct their ‘traditional way of immersion process’ i.e. carrying idols with saang on shoulders of carriers. Most of the puja committees had appealed to the SP, Mr Ghosh. In this regard, the ruling party leaders who are patronizing several baroari and club pujas are in trouble as this ‘saang issue’ has become a sentimental issue before them ahead of the assembly polls. The BJP leaders have kept close watch on this matter and they are looking for how the ruling party leaders manage the issue.

KRISHNAGAR, 30 SEP: At a time when miseries of common people are going to be compounded by dengue knocking our doors and many people raised fingers at the healthcare facilities for not providing health services especially to the ailing patients, a sub-divisional officer posted in Krishnagar, Nadia has shown his highest responsibility and humanity.

Manish Verma, SDO (Sadar) in Krishnagar is such a person who woke up in the morning after being called by an anonymous resident and heard his version carefully, took prompt action and admitted the caller’s father to a Covid hospital. He took barely two hours to complete his duty and responsibility. He even himself went to the Covid hospital and admitted the patient before discharging his ‘primary responsibility’.

Mr Verma, a senior most executive magistrate in the state, is a well-known officer to the Krishnagar residents for his prompt action especially during this pandemic crisis time. Amongst the officials in the district administration, Mr Verma has always continuously put forth his responsibilities in coping with the crisis.

International human rights law guarantees everyone the right to the highest attainable standard of health and obligates governments to take steps to prevent threats to public health and to provide medical care to those who need it.

Human rights law also recognizes that in the context of serious public health threats and public emergencies threatening the life of the nation, restrictions on some rights can be justified when they have a legal basis, are strictly necessary, based on scientific evidence and neither arbitrary nor discriminatory in application, of limited duration, respectful of human dignity, subject to review, and proportionate to achieve the objective.

The scale and severity of the COVID-19 pandemic clearly rises to the level of a public health threat that could justify restrictions on certain rights, such as those that result from the imposition of quarantine or isolation limiting freedom of movement.

At the same time, careful attention to human rights such as non-discrimination and human rights principles such as transparency and respect for human dignity can foster an effective response amidst the turmoil and disruption that inevitably results in times of crisis and limit the harms that can come from the imposition of overly broad measures that do not meet the above criteria.

Mr Verma has always played a pivotal role in maintaining human dignity while dealing with the Covid related works.

Mr Verma said, “Today at around 6 a.m., I  received a call from an unknown no. . Caller , one Shubhabrata Sarkar of Chashapara,  Ward No. 20   Krishnanagar informed me that his father Shyamlendu Sarkar , age 76 years and hyperglycemic ,  is having fever and respiratory distress since yesterday's night , which is unmanageable even by giving oxygen at home , and Oxygen saturation is fluctuating around 80 .

I took details of patient and sent those to Superintendent of Sadar Hospital as well as to Nodal Doctor of Glocal Hospital . I constantly rang them multiple times but of no avail. I later rang Dy CMIH - II also. Then, I myself contacted Medical Technologist, Tanmay and convinced him to come to Shaktinagar Hospital to do the RAT. I sent my vehicle for him and went personally to Shaktinagar Hospital. 102 ambulance was also arranged similarly by talking directly with Agency Supervisor who run and maintain ambulances.

Test was done at around 7 : 15 a.m. , which came positive .  At that time, I received return calls from Dy CMOH - II, Superintendent and Nodal Doctor of Glocal. Patient was later admitted in Glocal at around 8 : 15 a.m. in my presence.”

Amidst fight against Covid pandemic, SDO Manish Verma lends help to meritorious and economically poor students to pursue their future studies

Amidst fight against Covid pandemic, SDO Manish Verma lends help to meritorious and economically poor students to pursue their future studies

Mr. Verma said, “Doing well to others brings hope in the world and to you. It is thus self-gratifying. I hope that those who are on the receiving end today will become providers in the future and thus the chain of doing good will propagate. My appeal to them is - pay it forward.”

This has happened when COVID-19 pandemic is creating havoc not only on the mortality front but economically too, especially for those who are poor.

Rima Pal, younger daughter of a improvised motor-van puller of Kechuadanga Bakultala Para of Murutia Police Station in Karimpur was not certain about  pursuing her goal of an honours course in Geography despite securing 94.6% marks in Arts stream of this year H.S. He intends to pursue research after completing studies in Physics from Jadavpur University.

Situation of Suman Khan of Kanthalpuli, Chakdah Municipality, son of a tricycle van puller after securing 92 % marks in HS exam with dream of being an engineer and of Sourav Karmakar of Fuliapara in Santipur Police Station, a cerebral palsy warrior and son of a small-time jewelry maker, intending to pursue science stream at 10+2 level were also just a notch above the indigence.

Manish Verma, SDO (Sadar) in Krishnagar who is known to be a Good Samaritan enters into the picture. He provided Rima Paul a sum of Rs. 20,000 and Sourav Karmakar Rs. 10,000 to start their journeys. Suman Khan was provided a laptop computer to take an online engineering admission coaching with a fee paid by that officer.

Likewise, Baijayanta was provided Rs. 60,000 and a laptop computer to pursue his dream. And, along came the assurance of help and guidance in future also to pursue their goals.

In this noble task, another senior officer of Nadia District Administration, a noble soul who wants to be anonymous also contributed Rs. 50,000 and Mr. Asim Saha, Ex-chairman of Krishnagar municipality bore the cost of one laptop computer.

When asked, Mr. Verma said, “Doing well to others brings hope in the world and to you. It is thus self-gratifying. I hope that those who are on the receiving end today will become providers in the future and thus the chain of doing good will propagate. My appeal to them is - pay it forward.”

Biswabrata Goswami

KRISHNAGAR, 17 JUNE: Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) has taken a noble initiative, to help the people who have lost everything because of the super cyclone Amphan that ravaged the state.
They have provided study materials to the students of Pakhirala High School at Gosaba, a remotely located government aided school in Sundarbans area. Since the locality of that school is very much affected due to the cyclone so the students have lost their books and other study materials and they can’t afford to purchase those again. On a request from the headmaster of the Pakhirala High School, the vice chancellor of MAKAUT, Prof. Dr. Saikat Maitra took the initiative to provide all the learning materials to the affected students of the school, a MAKAUT spokesperson said.

One doth the scath and another hath the scorn : A Corona+ve man disappears, but police picks up a man with same name

One doth the scath and another hath the scorn : A Corona+ve man disappears, but police picks up a man with same name

Corona positive younger brother sent to home quarantine, Corona negative elder brother taken to covid hospital

Biswabrata Goswami

KRISHNAGAR, 14 MAY: This is called one doth the scath and another hath the scorn (Udhor pindi budhor ghare).
Scene-I : A middle-aged person, who had tested positive for Covid-19, has disappeared from Asansole hospital under mysterious circumstances a few days ago while the Nadia police picked up a youth having the same name of the person who fled, from Krishnagar and packed him in the Kalyani SNR Carnival Covid hospital.
Scene-II: An 18-year-old youth, who had tested positive for Covid-19, has been asked to stay in home quarantine, while his elder brother, who had tested negative, has been sent to Baroma Covid hospital in Mecheda. This incident occurred in Jhargram.
In the first case, a 45-year-old man has reportedly fled from the ESI Covid hospital in Asansole a few days ago. The man was admitted in the Asansole district hospital with some ailments, but he was later shifted to the Covid hospital as he was tested positive for Covid-19. But, under mysterious circumstances, he has not been traced inside the hospital for the last three days.
The hospital authorities and the district health department have remained tight-lipped, but till tonight the police are confused about his identity.
In the Covid status report, the man has reportedly registered his address as a resident of Nadia and put his mobile number. Accordingly, the Nadia police picked up a youth from Bowbazar in Krishnagar who has the same name and address registered in the covid status report.
But, confusion rose when the health authorities from Asansole sent a photograph to the Nadia district administration and police.

The photograph of the missing person was not identical with the youth who was picked up by the Nadia police based on the information that he being a covid positive patient has fled from the hospital.

“We are still confused, but it will be ascertained tomorrow when we will get the detailed call records of the registered phone number”, said a police officer in Krishnagar.
In the second case, the two brothers who work as goldsmiths in Sambalpur, have returned to their house on a walk recently. They could not return for many days due to lockdown. After returning home, they had gone to the Jhargram super specialty hospital for tests. The hospital authorities after collecting swab samples advised them to stay in home quarantine. Two days later, the health workers and police had gone to their house and accompanied the elder brother to the Baroma Covid hospital after informing him that he had tested positive for Covid-19. They also asked his younger brother to stay in home quarantine.

“After staying in the covid hospital for about four days, the elder brother was informed by one of his neighbours that he was not infected by corona virus. His younger brother’s test report was negative. The health staff have mistakenly picked him up and admitted him in the covid hospital”, said a health official.

The elder brother said, “When I was informed about the matter, I have stopped taking medicine. But, my younger brother who was actually tested positive has been left in home quarantine. I don’t know what will be the effect of this mistake”.

The district health department authorities denied commenting on this matter.

Orange tag under threat: Five new Covid-19 cases including nine-month-old child in Nadia

Three more containment zones are likely to be set up

Biswabrata Goswami

KRISHNAGAR, 13 MAY: Five persons including a nine-month-old girl have reportedly tested positive for Covid-19 in Nadia, taking the total number of cumulative cases to 14 till today.
Among 14 cases, only five new cases are active while the rest have already been discharged after they tested negative thrice during their stays in the Covid hospitals.
As the Nadia district falls under the orange zone, the fresh new five cases in a single day may put it into the red zone.
A senior health official, however, said that one positive case has no connection with the district as the infected police person, who tested positive in Kolkata, had not gone to his native village in Nakashipara. During his swab test he registered his address as a resident of Nakashipara in Nadia and thus he has been treated as a positive case from Nadia by the state health department. It should be corrected soon.
“Apart from this, two other cases have been reported from Gangnapur under Ranaghat-II block. But, these two persons are migrant workers and they have tested positive in East Burdwan. We are checking the history of these two persons and then we will tag them in our district’s account”, said a health official.

The district administration, on the other hand, is likely to announce three more containment zones by tomorrow. One in Santipur while two others will be in Gangnapur area in Ranaghat –II block, an administrative official said.

Sources in the district health department said the nine-month-old girl child, a resident of Barkulia village under Bagachra panchayat in Santipur, was admitted in a private hospital at Park Circus in Kolkata around 15 days ago for her ailments. Her family members, however, brought her back to their home in fear a few days later when some corona positive cases were reported in that hospital. They then took her to the Santipur hospital for treatment from where she was referred to the Krishnagar Sadar hospital. As her condition was critical, she was again referred to the Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital a few days ago.
“Yesterday, her swab sample was sent to Kolkata for a test and her test report returned positive today”, said a senior health official.
According to a health official, five persons including a driver of an ambulance and a nurse have been sent to an isolation center for observation. This apart, 25 persons in the locality who came in contact with the girl and her family members have been advised to stay in home quarantine.
Soon after the report came to him, the superintendent of Santipur hospital conducted a meeting with the chairman of Rogi Kalyan Samity and local administration in view to combat the spread of the virus in the local community.
The administration has already sealed off the village and announced a containment zone, an administrative official said.

A 55-year-old police person, who is attached with the Tiljala police station in Kolkata and a resident of Kanthalberia under Nakashipara police station limits in Nadia, tested positive today. As he had not gone to his native village for the last three months, the district administration has no headache for sending his family members in quarantine here, a police official said.

Meanwhile, the Nadia district administration was apparently hurried for the whole day to nab a corona positive person who fled from a private nursing home in Asansole. Finally, the man was found from his rented house at Bowbazar in Krishngara and he was immediately sent to the Kalyani SNR Carnival Covid hospital for further tests.

According to health officials, the man, a resident of Kusthia in Tehatta had gone to Asansole for his Ayurvedic business. But, he was admitted in a nursing home where he had tested positive for Covid-19. Three days ago, he fled from an isolation center and stayed in various places including his relative houses in Tehatta and Nakashipara. Today, after tracking his cell phone location, the police picked him up from Bowbazar area in Krishnagar where he lives in a rented house with his family. Suspecting the spread of the virus, the district administration is now tracking the persons who came in contact with him at various places.

A health official said, “We will again collect swab samples for a test to confirm whether the man is infected or not”.
