MIDNAPORE, 13 AUG: Hema Choubey, an AICC member in Kharagpur joined Trinamul Congress after deserting Congress with which she had been associated since 2009.

She took the party flag from the Trinamul Congress district president Ajit Maity at Malancha in Kharagpur yesterday. Another Congress leader Debangshu Gangopadhyay, a former Kharagpur Town Congress president also joined Trinamul Congress along with Choubey at Malancha.

Choubey is familiar as a daughter-in-law of the former veteran CPI leader late Narayan Choubey.

Choubey was with Trinamul Congress, which she joined, inspired by Mamata Banerjee, in 2001 after her husband Goutam Choubey was killed by some miscreants on that year. Goutam joined Trinamul Congress in 2001 and he was killed on that day at Malancha when he was declared as a Trinamul Youth Congress district president.

Since that time, Hema Choubey became associated with Trinamul Congress and she was a Trinamul Congress candidate from Panskura in 2004 parliamentary polls.

In 2006, she wanted to be a candidate from Kharagpur assembly seat, but relation with Debashis Choudhury, a close friend of Goutam Choubey turned worst for this reason. That time, Debashis was a TMC candidate. Later, in 2009, Choubey joined Congress and was a jote candidate (Congres-Trinamul) in the 2011 assembly election from Garbeta.

In 2014, she again deserted Congress and joined Trinamul for some days. After a few days, Choubey again returned to Congress dumping Trinamul.

This time, she again took the Trinamul Congress flag from the party’s district president.

“Trinamul Congress leaders including Kharagpur MLA Pradip Sarkar wanted me to come back in Trinamul. So, I decided to join the party. This apart, in Kharagpur, Congress doesn’t have leaders left after Chacha’s (Gyan Sing Sohonpal) death”, Choubey said.

KHARAGPUR, 19 JULY: Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed an advanced weather prediction system to facilitate better decision making in agricultural production and reduction of climatic uncertainties and risks.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences the two projects ‘Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa’ ‘and ‘Forecasting Agricultural output using Space, Agrometeorology & Land based observations’ provide timely and right management decisions to farmers to minimize the climatic risk of agricultural production and improve economic return of farming community.
The Institute, in collaboration with India Meteorological Department, is disseminating a weather based agro-advisory to farmers for improving agricultural production in highly variable weather conditions.

“The agro-advisory indicating crop and variety selection, sowing/planting time, land preparation, input management, harvest, etc are prepared based on future weather and land characteristics of specific location,” said Prof. Dilip Kumar Swain, from the Dept. of Agricultural & Food Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.

Yield forecasting of crops such as rice, mustard and potato are done at the beginning of sowing/planting, during cropping season and before crop harvest for different districts of West Bengal for introducing specific actions to avoid the yield loss due to weather abnormalities.
“Farmers get awareness on input management such as fertilizer, irrigation, and pesticide application every week throughout the cropping season. Based on a five-day weather forecast, the agro-advisory is prepared on Tuesday and Friday every week and communicated to farmers’ through their mobile phone,” he added.

The advisory is sent in local language to about 3 lakh farmers of five districts (West Medinipur, Jharagram, Bankura, Birbhum, and Purulia) in West Bengal. The advisory is also communicated to district level agricultural officers, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, NGOs, farmers’ portal, TV programme, etc.

Using the advisory, farmers protect their crop from extreme events and reduce the production cost by need based irrigation, fertilizer and pesticide application.
“Besides sending the agro-advisory, we also conduct training and awareness programmes regularly in villages on organic farming, vermicomposting, hydroponics, integrated farming, advanced production technology, etc for sustainable agricultural growth, farmers’ capacity building, rural employment generation, increasing economic profit, etc.,” remarked Prof. Virendra Kumar Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur.
A good response from the farmers was received about the agromet advisory services provided by IIT Kharagpur, he confirmed.

KHARAGPUR, 10 JULY: In order to improve surveillance and monitoring of Indian Railways’ assets spread across a wide area, South Eastern Railway’s RPF have deployed drones to help them with the task.
The drones have been used to keep a watchful eye day and night in the entire network of SER. These drones are being used mainly at Yard Signalling Infrastructures, Wagon Stocks, Good Sheds, Station Relay Rooms etc.
The concept of security patrolling through drones is being done since it is impossible to guard the huge assets wide-spread over SER. Keeping all-around surveillance round the clock on the fixed and moving Railway assets is a challenging task during lockdowns.
RPF Personnel have deployed the drones to optimise Security Personnel’s effectiveness and proactivity. With the help of drone cameras, the images of railway areas are being captured to give the clear view of the area within a radius of 2 kilometres from suitable heights.
Sniffer dogs have also been deployed to detect explosives, theft, criminal activities and security of railway assets during lockdowns.
Railway Protection Force of South Eastern Railway has played a significant role in providing security to railway passengers as well as in guarding its property and vast installations. In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic followed by lockdowns, the movement of passenger trains has been suspended but the movement of Time Tabled Parcel Express Trains for transportation of essential commodities is still being run.
RPF Personnel of South Eastern Railway, during Lockdowns have been engaged on duty for protecting Railway assets at long areas of this railway. This is very difficult task to be on duty when the rest of the country has been staying in the safety of their homes.
In such situation, RPF personnel have been performing their duties around the clock with a view to guard and protect railway properties spreading over 4 Divisions viz Kharagpur, Adra, Chakradharpur and Ranchi in the states of West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand.
This apart, SER’s RPF Personnel have been able to perform their multifarious duties during lockdowns. They have taken the role for providing meals and food packets to the needy and helpless people in the vicinity of railway areas.
To prevent the spread of Coronavirus, RPF personnel have manufactured face masks and sanitizers as in-house production. These face masks and sanitizers have been distributed amongst RPF constables and their wards and have raised awareness about the threat of Covid-19 and social distancing.  Shramik Specials were being run to transport the migrant workers from various parts of the country.
These Shramik Special trains were escorted by RPF Personnel over South Eastern Railway during lockdowns. Some special trains are running towards different cities of the country. There are Thermal Screening at all entry points of the stations.
SER’s Security personnel have manned the entry points and have permitted the travellers to entry and exit. They have also ensured to aware the passengers the habit of wearing face masks and social distancing as precautionary measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.
